Review: Althorne Estate Chardonnay 2021

This is simply a devine English Chardonnay from the Crouch Valley in Essex. Bright straw in the glass with pale green hues it carries aromas of citrus blossom, green apple and a hint of toasted almond on the nose. On the palate it is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, flavours of lemon zest, pear and ripe white peach with hints of orangey citrus too. Subtle oak spice and a creamy mid-palate add layers of texture. The finish is clean and refreshing with a pleasing minerality that adds length. Versatile with food, it pairs well with roast chicken, crab, shellfish, creamy pasta or soft cheeses. Ideal for those who enjoy a balanced, classically styled Chardonnay with restrained oak and fresh fruit character. My guess is if it had “Burgundy” somewhere on the label it would cost three times as much.
